CIRCLE Score - Measurement - Ages 14 to 25

The score tells you where a young person is. The gap tells you what to do about it.

The headline score is the practitioner's. The gap is never averaged into it - it is carried into the next ninety days as the thing to work on, and the same two people score it again from wherever they now stand. Evidence of Progress is written at the close of each turn, never scored, never added into the fifty - so any two turns compare directly.

CIRCLE Progress Turn - D.M. / RLE-001 - Age 16

CIRCLE Progress Turn · Turn 1 - Following the Opening Circle

Due this week

Scored with the young person present. Two scores per dimension - theirs and yours. Where you differ by 3 or more, that difference is the conversation, not the problem.

Anchors - Residential & Care Leavers
1-2
The young person cannot show up to sessions or cannot stay present when they do. The session cannot hold them.
3-4
Shows up unevenly. Some sessions hold, others collapse. Hard to predict week to week.
5-6
Showing up consistently. Can be present even when things outside are difficult.
7-8
Reliable attendance. The session is a settled point in the week.
9-10
The session is something they own. Arrives ready, leaves with something they chose to work on.

3-4
Can recover with substantial support, and only after time has passed.
5-6
Beginning to notice their own state before it takes over. Will sometimes act on that.
7-8
Uses a strategy that works, mostly unprompted. Can stay in difficulty and come through it.

7-8
Describes themselves in their own terms without that becoming the whole story.

Whole person, whole journey · One idea, working on two timescales

The whole person - a circle

Circumstances, inner strength, relationships, confidence and life opportunity are held together as one circle - because a life does not improve one box at a time. Close the circle and you have a person, not a checklist.

The whole journey - a spiral

A young person's progress is recorded like the rings of a tree - the good turns and the hard ones alike - so it travels with them across settings. Setbacks return, but it is never the same circle twice: what was built is written down and carried forward, so the next adult starts from what is known rather than from zero.

The practice standard. Four principles that define how a trusted adult shows up - not what they do, but how they are in the room.

R
Relationship-led

The practice standard that holds when the adult changes. Consistent across every setting. Portable across every move. The methodology that travels with the young person, not the practitioner.

E
Emotionally attuned

Reads the room and adjusts. Meets what is actually in front of them, not what the referral form said.

A
Attentive to the past

Behaviour makes sense in context. Asks what it is protecting against before deciding what to do with it.

L
Learning-focused

Something transfers from every session. Not necessarily what was planned. That is the work.

R.E.A.L.® defines how a trusted adult practises at every level. The four levels are: Relational Presence, Intentional Skill-Building, Supported Autonomy, and Planned Transition.

The levels are not a hierarchy of good or poor engagement. Movement between them is developmentally led, not time-based, and readiness shows through emotional regulation, engagement and relational safety and trust - not compliance or performance. It is what stops us pushing skills too early, raising demands while emotional regulation is low, or reading disengagement as resistance. The structure is scaffolding in Vygotsky's sense: support that reduces as capability grows, until it is no longer needed.

L.I.F.E. Programme

Registered Trade Mark

The four pillars absent from every school curriculum. Not delivered in sequence - delivered in response to where the young person is.

L
Lifestyle

Health, routine, physical activity, nutrition, sleep, money, relationships with self and others.

I
Identity & Confidence

Who they are beyond their story so far. Strengths, values, voice, what they stand for.

F
Future Focus

Direction, aspiration, goal-setting, planning, employer connections, skills for adulthood.

E
EET

Education, employment, training. Not just entry - sustained 13 and 26 weeks. The destination.

CIRCLE Score - Across Three Contexts

Pending study design sign-off - Edge Hill University

Five dimensions scored 1-10. The score is consistent across all settings. Anchors vary by setting - what a 5 looks like in a residential home is different from what it looks like in a school. Switch the context in the topbar and the anchor language updates instantly. The score is consistent. What changes is the language. That is what allows the record to survive a young person moving from a school to a residential home to a community programme without starting from zero. - because what a 5 looks like in a residential home is different from what it looks like in a school. Switch the context in the topbar and re-read the anchors on the CIRCLE Score page.

Community & NEET

Anchors describe engagement, attendance and presence in a community outreach context. Sport and community settings. 486,000 hidden NEETs. The engagement magnets.

Schools & AP

Anchors describe engagement within or alongside an educational setting. Burnham reforms. 14-plus technical pathways. Year 10 as the entry point.

Residential & Care Leavers

Anchors describe presence within a residential or supported accommodation context. 3.5x more likely NEET. The record travels with them across every placement.

The rule that protects the instrument. Anchors are interpretive guides, never arithmetical sub-scores. The dimension is scored 1-10 as a whole by two people. The moment three sub-scores are averaged into a dimension, every baseline ever taken stops being comparable.
